SurfRider Foundation Beach Cleanup

Last Saturday, I was invited to help with a beach cleanup with the SurfRider foundation. Not generally my cup of tea (so to speak) but a tremendous opportunity to meet people who know a whole lot more about the plastic in the ocean than I do and let's face it, plastic in the ocean is probably my biggest passion right now.

Together we collected about 35 pounds of garbage. I personally added less than 1/2 pound but in my defense, I collected nearly 100 cigarette butts which tend to be labor intensive and very toxic containing such wonderful chemicals as Benzopyrene (carcinogen), Arsenic, Acetone, Formaldehyde and Ammonia. Paper Water Bottles and the Ocean

Plastic in the Pacific Ocean

It really doesn’t take much to get me excited but if there is one environmental issue that keeps me up at night, it’s the plastic island called the Pacific Garbage Patch. You’ve already heard me talk about the Pacific Gyre and the 40+ million ton island of plastic in the Pacific Ocean.

It all starts when someone accidently drops a water bottle which goes down a storm drain then floats out to the ocean where 7 to 20 years later, it winds up in this big pile of plastic. Over the next several years, it breaks down into tiny pieces; the fish eat it, birds eat it, turtles eat and they all die. More...
