T12 Fluorescent Lighting and Going Green

Today (June 30, 2010) is a big day toward making the world a little more energy efficient and you probably won't hear a word about it on the news.  Today marks the end of an era that begain over 70 years ago... The end of the T12 Fluorescent lighting system.

So here's the deal... the T12 is the basic 4 foot Fluorescent light that you see in offices everywhere.  They are usually recessed into the ceiling of your office or hanging over the work benches if you're in manufacturing and if you're like me, they make your eyes hurt. More...

Until a few months ago, I was banking at Wachovia. I really liked them but they were bought by Wells Fargo so now I bank there. It's not that big of a deal. I need to walk an additional 300 yards from my office. I still see my same tellers, I can still write checks for my business, etc. but that's not the point of this article. The last few days, I noticed that my favorite Teller was using a "Green" Biodegradable cup made from Polylactic Acid (PLA) which is Biodegradable and Compostable... it's made from Corn.  I ask and it turns out that all through (at least that branch of Wells Fargo), this is the only type of disposable cup used.  This is just one small effort to be more Green. It's starting to come out, the truth about how much oil is leaking into the Golf of Mexico.  Probably the most unbiased numbers I've been able to find are on the PBS web site.  They talk about how they came up with their oil spill numbers and it makes sense.  They also created a link to the live video and an estimate of how many gallons leaked.
